What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?
A 20-yard dumpster holds about 7 to 10 pickup-truck loads of debris. We recommend the 20-yard dumpster most for whole-house decluttering and kitchen remodels. Weight still matters, so keep the 3-ton limit in mind as you load. Typical jobs that fit:
- A kitchen remodel: cabinets, counters, drywall and flooring
- A whole-house cleanout before a move or sale
- A roof tear-off of about 25 squares (see the weight math below)
- Flooring or carpet removal across several rooms
These are typical examples. Bulky items take more room than you expect, so describe your job when you call.
Will a 20-yard dumpster hold my roof?
A 20-yard dumpster holds about 25 squares of one-layer asphalt shingles before reaching its 3-ton limit, if your shingles weigh about 240 pounds per square. Check the weight on your own bundle wrapper. A second layer roughly doubles the weight per square.
Example: 80 lb per bundle × 3 bundles per square = 240 lb per square. 25 squares × 240 lb = 6,000 lb = 3 tons, the amount included.
Is the 20-yard the right size, or should I go bigger?
If you expect to fill the 20-yard dumpster past the top rim, move up to the 30-yard dumpster; a second haul is billed as a whole new rental. If your job is small, the 15-yard dumpster saves space on your driveway.

20-yard dumpster questions
Is a 20-yard dumpster big enough for a kitchen remodel?
Yes. Most kitchen remodels fit in a 20-yard dumpster, including cabinets, countertops, drywall and flooring. If you are also gutting a dining room or bathroom, ask about the 30-yard.
Can I put dirt or concrete in a 20-yard dumpster?
No. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in the 10- and 15-yard dumpsters. A 20-yard dumpster full of heavy debris would be over highway weight limits.
How many pickup loads fit in a 20-yard dumpster?
About 7 to 10 pickup loads, assuming an 8-foot pickup bed loaded level holds 2 to 3 cubic yards.
What if my 20-yard dumpster weighs more than 3 tons?
You pay $75 per ton over 3 tons, by the exact pound. At 3.4 tons, that is 0.4 ton over, or $30.
